This media room was part of an entire remodeled basement project in the Seattle area. The homeowners wanted a cozy room where they could entertain family and friends that would also double as a functional workspace. Their basement was the logical choice as it already had an existing family room with a fireplace, and was large enough to accomodate both needs. The feel the homeowners wanted to acheive was casual luxury, so the materials and finishes were chosen to convey warmth and quality.

Before the room could be designed, the homeowners had to determine what electronic system components they would purchase. That purchase would determine the design of built in cabinetry, furniture placement, and other spatial considerations in the room. The other design limitation for this media room was the pre-existing fireplace.

To prepare for the work, Potter Construction took the room down to the studs and cement floor. The cabinet unit around the media screen was custom built to hold all the system components. It was designed with enough open space to change components over time as audio/video products change.  The custom cabinets were stained to match the workspace cabinets. Stock cabinets from Canyon Creek Cabinets were used for the workspace in order to keep costs low. The "cabinets" under the banquette were built to cover a visible piece of the home's foundation.

For the final luxury touches, we completely rebuilt the fireplace and installed a marble hearth complete with a custom designed mantle. Faux paint was applied to imitate the marble look.
