We are in the process of finding/buying home -- some of the homes we have seen and liked have gas stoves. What should we budget as cost to convert the electric stove to a gas stove? Thanks.

You can not convert an electric stove to gas. You will have to buy a gas stove or get an electrician to run a circuit for electric which  may be the least costly. You may like gas but it is faster and takes some getting used too. Ricky

How exciting that you are searching for a new home.  I will have to agree with Ricky you can not just change out an electric stove for a gas one, but you can convert to gas.

Gas gives you a finer control with your temperature for all types of cooking.  The burners heat up quicker for one.

You will have to plan on having a gas line brought to the kitchen location where the range is now or plan on a kitchen remodel allocating where that gas line will end up finally.  Working with your contractor or a plumbing contractor ensures that the pipes are laid correctly for safe installation.

You might also consider induction cooktops units.  These cooking units use less energy.  They heat up almost instantly, easy to clean up and the only thing is you have to use special magnetic pans to conduct the heat transfer but you just need more watts and no gas line.  Check out this article on Induction vs Electrical for more facts.  http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/656882
