The Energy-Efficient Home: Q & A With Puget Sound Energy

Posted: August 2009

As consumers, we all want to be more energy-conscious, reduce our monthly bills, and do our part for the environment. But where does one start? The HomeSavvi Team asked Remington (Rem) Husted, Market Manager for Energy Efficiency Services, Residential Energy Management at Puget Sound Energy in Bellevue, WA, about his best recommendations for a more energy-efficient house, from low- / no-cost to more expensive options.

HomeSavvi: Hello Rem! Can you tell us a bit more about your role at Puget Sound Energy?

Rem: Puget Sound Energy, like many other utilities, offers gas and electric rebate programs to help customers save energy. I manage a number of these programs. Our group is tasked with initiating new energy-saving measures, and evaluating the success of existing programs for the utility and its customers. Our Energy Advisor Group talks to local homeowners on a daily basis, and our Energy Efficiency Call Center handles some 100,000 calls from homeowners a year. It is encouraging to see that the topic is becoming more top-of-mind for so many consumers. This makes our work well worthwhile.

HomeSavvi: At the outset, what does it really take for a homeowner to become more energy-conscious, and therefore work towards an energy-efficient house?

making your home energy efficient, energy efficiency, homes energy efficiencyRem: It all starts with committing to a change of behavior and lifestyle. Paying attention to all the little things that add up, from closing the drapes at night and turning off the lights when you leave the room, to upgrading your light bulbs and setting back the thermotast. Being energy-conscious is a whole state of mind.

HomeSavvi: Is there a particular time of year that is preferable to get motivated to embark on a home energy-saving  project?

Rem: Any time is good, but my experience is that if you can, it is always best to hire contractors during traditional slow times (spring and summer) when it’s not so hectic, so that extra time can be spent to ensure that the job is done right.
