The Kitchen Gets Natural

Posted: May 2008

The 19th annual Cost vs. Value Report shows homeowners can improve the value of their home by 80 percent if they remodel their kitchen. Today’s kitchen has become a gathering space for friends, family, and guests. A few simple and inexpensive changes can increase the value of your home and provide your family with a safe, comfortable living space.

Some trends have been around for ages, and continue to be popular. High end, restaurant style appliances, stainless steel, wood floors, and stone countertops add style to the look and feel of the home.

Remodeling the kitchen provides an opportunity to improve your home’s energy efficiency. A new trend focuses on converting the kitchen into an environment friendly and efficient area.

How can you turn your kitchen “green”?

•  Bamboo, cork, and eucalyptus come from rapidly re-growing forests -- and make for beautiful flooring options. These trees grow fifty percent faster then their hardwood counterparts.

•  Pre-designed recycle bins can help take the mess out of recycling, and be made to blend into your cabinet design.

•  Refinish wood cabinets with an environmentally-friendly stain or paint. Traditional cabinets are not water resistant. The moisture provides a suitable environment for bacteria.

•  Countertops made from concrete or indigenous stone are durable and water resistant.

•  Maximize natural lighting with the addition of skylights. Dimmer switches can provide light from bright to dim, and save money on an electric bill.

- Buy energy efficient appliances in stainless steel. Though stainless steel is a bit harder to clean, it adds beauty to any kitchen. Buying energy efficient appliances saves both water and electricity.
