Kitchen Faucet Styles and Types

Posted: March 2008

Kitchen faucets can be described as the jewelry of the kitchen. But with so many styles it may be hard to choose what will work best for you.

Two-handle centerset style: Common in the bathroom, the spout and both valves are combined on a single base unit.

Single-handle faucets: common in both baths and kitchens, are centersets where hot and cold are controlled by one lever or knob that's often part of the spout.

Widespread faucet: with this, the hot-water valve, cold-water valve and spout are all mounted separately.

The right type to choose depends on your preference, your budget and the sink (or counter area). Kitchen sinks generally have holes drilled for 8-inch centers or a single hole for single-handle faucets. Before you buy your faucet, it's essential to know the sink or countertop's hole configuration. If you're going to want an instant hot-water spout, a soap dispenser, a sprayer, or any other accessory, be sure to get a sink that has the right whole configuration to accommodate these.

Before you purchase a new kitchen faucet, take a look at your current kitchen and consider how you use it. Consider why, and how often, you head to the sink. What do you like about your current faucet? Also, remember to match the strainer and any other desired accessories that are purchased separately.
