A Guide to Bathroom Countertops - Ceramic Tile

Posted: April 2009

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tiles have been used for centuries. They mainly consist of clay and other naturally occurring materials which are baked in ovens at extremely high temperatures and then given a coating called glazing. Since ceramic is an all natural product, it does not retain bacteria, allergen and odors, making it a safe Bathroom Vanity Topand hygienic choice. The best aspect of using ceramic tiles lie in the design possibilities they offer. Ceramic tile counters can be matched to floors, walls, backsplashes etc. A vast variety of custom or handmade tiles are also available

Product Types

Ceramic tiles are available in practically every color or textures imaginable. They come in various sizes and shapes. The strength of the tiles is defined by their grade. For a bathroom top it is preferable to have at least a grade III or a grade IV. Since tiles are easy to install, ceramic tiles are very popular with Do It Yourselfers, however, for more complex patterns it is better to hire a professional.

Maintenance and Durability

Ceramic tiles are relatively easy to clean and long lasting. Ceramic tile tops are extremely resistant to heat however; they will chip or crack if something heavy is dropped on them. Ceramic tiles are also water resistant; hence water spills on the surface should not be a big concern.

HomeSavvi Tips

•    An important aspect of all tile installation is the use of grout. Make sure that you match the grout color to your tiles to get the desired look for your vanity top.
•    Ensure that you store extra tiles as well as grout in case of chipping or cracks. The tile can then be replaced later.
•    The spacing of tiles can decide the look of your vanity top.
