To Every Room its Color

Posted: June 2009

STS RemodelingSituation

This family living in the University district of Seattle, WA wanted to make their older craftsman residence warmer, and turn their interior from white to colorful. Alongside a much-needed infusion of color, the vision for the home was to create a Tuscan feel. The homeowner who loves cooking wanted to create a warm place for entertaining many guests. They called upon STS Remodeling Corp.’s Craig Haveson, who worked hand in hand with Interior Designer Cynthia Snellman of Sisu Design, and Mark Shuler of Shuler Architecture to take up the challenge.

To Every Room its Color

The inspiration behind the home’s color palette started with the kitchen where the Tuscan feel took center stage with an infusion of Terracota tones. All paint colors used throughout the home for this remodel came from Benjamin Moore. The living room was painted Northampton Putty, which was the perfect color against which to display the homeowner’s bright and colorful art pieces. The dining room turned Toasted Pecan, the sun room Butternut Squash, the entry way Crownsville Gray while the stairway was lightened up with Abingdon Putty. The powder room is the designer’s favorite room in the house. This tiny room with no windows and a high ceiling needed something interesting to liven it up. The designer chose a very patterned slate tile for the floor, and pulled the tile’s key colors for the walls (Butternut Squash) and the ceiling (Green Tea). The guest bedroom was painted Beach Glass, a calming soft blue to create a relaxing atmosphere, and the master bedroom became October Mist. One of the kids chose Majestic Sage for their bedroom. An eggshell finish was mostly used in the bathrooms and kitchen, and a flat finish for the rest of the house.

STS RemodelingOn the outside, the house trim was painted with Benjamin Moore’s Monterrey White, the house body with Nature Scenery, the inner window trim with Gargoyle, the front door with Hodley Red, and the front porch floor with Woodcliff Lake. This subtle exterior color palette was chosen to differentiate the home from neighboring houses on both sides, while striving to subtly blend in.

The whole remodeling project, which entailed the addition of a powder room, and the remodel of the master bath and kitchen, took three months to complete.
