Ceiling: To Color or Not to Color? That is the Question!

Posted: June 2009

Painting CeilingsOften called the fifth wall, the ceiling represents one-sixth of the space in a room. Yet for decades, the only default color we have graced them with has been … white. Times have changed – homeowners can now dare to be bolder in their ceiling paint choices to address different ceiling types, and create the right effect in a room. Here are a few tips from The HomeSavvi Team for consideration.

Patterned / Popcorned Ceilings

There are two challenges with heavily textured ceilings – they are typically very difficult to paint well because of their texture, and painting them a color other than white draws too much attention to them. If you are set on using color on your ceiling, consider having it re-plastered first to address the first challenge. Then consult with your remodeling professional and ask what the best color options are, so you avoid any surprises.

High Ceilings

If you have high ceilings, you can paint them virtually any color that goes with the rest of the room. As a general rule, ceilings that are lighter than the walls feel higher, while those that are darker feel lower, contributing to a cozy feel for the room. Adding crown molding is also a good option to bring a ceiling down and give a room a nice finish. Painting the top 12 inches of wall with the same ceiling color will make a ceiling appear even lower.

Low or Average Ceilings

Painting CeilingsConsider painting low ceilings with a tint of the color you are using on the walls. The ceiling paint formula interior designers usually swear by is to take ¼ of the wall color, and blend it with white to get a lighter, more subtle shade for the ceiling. This will help to round out the room, and make the ceiling part of the overall decor.

You can also paint the ceiling a light color, and bring the wall color up six inches on to the ceiling. Painting the baseboards the same color as the walls can also add to the illusion of height.
