Aging in Place: How to Make your Elderly Parents’ Home Safe for Life

Posted: March 2008

If you got a call tomorrow that your father had broken his hip and needed surgery, followed by weeks in a wheel chair and then the assistance of a walker, are you confident he could function safely and comfortably in his house as it is now?

Your Thinking CAP

According to the AARP, “Older homeowners overwhelmingly prefer to age in place, which means living in your home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level.” Thanks to the foresight of the Remodelers Council of the National Association of Home Builders and the AARP, in collaboration with the NAHB Research Center and NAHB 50+ Housing Council, a continuing education curriculum was developed to certify contractors in remodeling homes (or building additions or new homes) to accommodate America’s aging population for in-home independence.

A contractor who has earned the Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation is specially trained in the unique needs of the disabled and older adults who may have mobility or strength issues, modification options for homes that will reduce barriers and make it easier for people to meet the aging-in-place criteria of safety, comfort and independence. They also know about specialty products, serving as a turn-key resource for clients.

Additionally, CAPS graduates adhere to a strict code of ethics, commit to continuing education programs to remain current as they maintain their designation, and provide service in the community.

To speak with a CAPS contractor, visit the NAHB website (http://www.nahb.org/), search for CAPS directory and enter your state for a list. State home-building trade associations, the local or state office of consumer protection, and many departments of aging can also provide a list of CAPS-certified contractors in your area.
